Baby Crib Mattress
Before your baby is born, one the first things you have to do in preparation is to buy a crib. After you’ve done that, you’re still not out of the woods yet. The next preparation is to choose a baby crib mattress for the crib.
You might think that it’s not a big deal and it’s a very easy choice but you have to follow some safety precautions in order to ensure the safety and comfort of your child.
- Safety is first so choose a firm baby crib mattress. You might be tempted to buy soft mattresses because you want to make your baby comfortable but it is very risky. The fabric of soft mattresses can cover the mouth and nose of the baby during sleep which could lead to suffocation.
- Also, when the face of the baby sinks in the soft fabric the released air filled with carbon dioxide might be inhaled which could cause drowsiness even death at extreme cases. This could lead to drowsiness and even death at extreme cases. Using a firm mattress minimizes these risks.
- The size of the mattress should fit perfectly to the crib. Some mattresses and cribs are made to match together so this should be easy. It is important to note though that there shouldn’t be any noticeable gaps between the sides of the crib and the edge of the mattress. If you can fit at least two fingers in the gap, then the mattress is too small.
- The material used to make the mattress should also be a factor. Some mattresses have hypoallergenic or organic fabric to reduce germs and dust mites. Others have absorbent and waterproof fabric to protect your baby from wetness. In the end, the choice of what kind of baby crib mattress you buy is entirely up to your personal preference.
